Its walls date back to a time when Christopher Columbus had not yet set his sights on America – and one or two knights probably stopped here for a pint. There was even once a secret underground passageway leading directly from Kaprun Castle to here. And if you want to know what else happened here, we’ll be happy to tell you – perhaps over a glass of wine.
The Ghost of Mitteregger
Where old walls tell stories, one thing cannot be missing: our house ghost. He is said to have once been a knight – perhaps one of the guardians of Kaprun Castle who sought refuge in the Mitteregger via the secret passage. Today, the passage is bricked up, but behind the stone wall in the old vaulted cellar, you can still sense his presence. Our knight ghost is not a restless spectre, quite the contrary: he is friendly, humorous and loves good company. As long as the wine flows and the schnapps doesn’t run out, he remains cheerful and good-natured. It is said that he watches over our house, ensures good spirits and that the Mitteregger always remains lively – as it has done for centuries. Anyone sitting in our cellar, between the old stone walls and the quiet crackling of history, may even feel him – this witty breath of the past that makes our inn so special – and has done so for over 600 years.
