Skiing

The Kitzsteinhorn offers thrilling glacier skiing at over 3,000 metres – with guaranteed snow from autumn to spring and spectacular panoramic views. The Maiskogel is ideal for families and leisure skiers, with wide slopes and cosy huts. On the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See, sunny slopes with views of Lake Zell await – perfect for those who want to combine skiing fun with beautiful views. Sledging
Tobogganing in Zell am See-Kaprun offers pure variety – from leisurely to fast-paced, from day to night.
The natural toboggan run from Köhlergraben through the Schmittental valley is ideal for families: around one kilometre long, easy to navigate and, when there is sufficient snow, illuminated daily until 10 p.m. If that’s not enough for you, venture onto the three-kilometre-long, illuminated Kohlschnait toboggan run in Bruck an der Glocknerstraße. Whether you walk up or take the convenient toboggan express, a cosy stop at the inn awaits you at the top before you head back down into the valley. A real highlight is the 14-kilometre toboggan run in Bramberg am Wildkogel, the longest illuminated run in the world – easily accessible by mountain railway and an experience for the whole family. And if you can’t get enough, you can whizz through steep curves and roundabouts all year round on the ‘Maisi Flitzer’ Alpine Coaster on the Maiskogel – tobogganing fun with an adrenaline rush guaranteed!
Cross-country skiing
At Hotel Mitteregger, you can strap on your skis right outside the door – the cross-country ski trail runs right past the hotel. Whether you prefer classic cross-country skiing or the more athletic skating style, the Zell am See-Kaprun region offers over 100 kilometres of perfectly groomed trails for every style and pace. Beginners are best off starting on the Schlossloipe trail in Kaprun. It runs almost flat around the medieval Kaprun Castle – with lots of charm and little incline.
Those who like to enjoy the panorama while on the move will find fantastic views of the Kitzsteinhorn and the Hohe Tauern mountains on the Brunnwiesloipe and Golfplatzloipe trails in Zell am See. The extensive network of cross-country trails extends to Niedernsill, Piesendorf, Maishofen, Fusch, Bruck and Saalfelden – perfect for those who like to rack up the kilometres or simply enjoy the tranquillity of winter.
Ice skating
Whether on sparkling natural ice, under floodlights or in the middle of the village – ice skating in Zell am See-Kaprun is all about fun, exercise and that special winter feeling. When the temperatures are right, Lake Zell becomes the most beautiful natural ice rink far and wide. Here, skaters of all ages glide across the mirror-smooth ice – with a view of the snow-covered peaks and the town of Zell am See in the background. Those who prefer to skate regardless of the weather can do so at the Zell am See ice rink – perfectly prepared, with music, floodlights and an extra dose of atmosphere. And in Kaprun, a particularly charming outdoor ice rink awaits families, children and anyone who simply enjoys gliding along at the entrance to the town. Skates can be hired on site, so just drop by and start skating!
Winter hiking
When the snow crunches under your shoes and the air is so clear that you can see further than you can think – then it’s winter hiking season in Zell am See-Kaprun. On your own or on a guided snowshoe hike, you can discover the quiet side of the Alps: untouched slopes, snow-covered forests and viewpoints that simply make you pause. Those who prefer to stay on cleared paths can enjoy the many winter and walking trails around the region: from the idyllic lake promenade to the sunny high-altitude promenade on the Schmittenhöhe. The Filzmoosweg trail, the golf course circuit and the Plettsaukopf circular hiking trail also invite you to enjoy leisurely tours with panoramic views. And the winter hiking map provides the perfect overview, making it easy to find your favourite route – whether on the lake shore, on the Mitterberg or high above Kaprun.
Ski tours
The Zell am See-Kaprun region offers ski tourers an impressive variety of options: from high-alpine experiences on the Kitzsteinhorn with the ‘Schneekönigin’ and ‘Eisbrecher’ routes to the leisurely Maiskogel tour in Kaprun and the popular Ronachkopf in Thumersbach, which is reserved exclusively for ski tourers. There are also fantastic opportunities around the Schmittenhöhe and in the neighbouring regions of Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn.
